The Horror Geek Speaks: Two Evil Eyes Before we get to today's column, a few comments.First off, I mentioned doing a Halloween Viewing Guide today. That was a great idea...so great, in fact, that I had it last year. Since I still recommend those films, you can find that column back in the archives.Secondly, in response to the question about a fourth Dead film, a reader sent this:Fangoria writes, 'The first order of business is, of course, the long-mooted fourth in his zombie trilogy. Undead fans have been waiting nearly 20 years for a follow-up to Day of the Dead, and rumors began circulating back as far as 1998, with the latest buzz that a script has been making the rounds for backing. Romero advises that this film, currently titled Land of the Dead, is definitely an active project, but it has no set production date and its fate is still uncertain. Among Romero's three active features, Land is the furthest from production; he has an agreement with Fox Searchlight (which scored this past summer with the zombie variation 28 Days Later) to write and direct Land, but this is still tentative. "I have other possibilities if Fox drops it," he notes. "I have interest from another place." Romero also reveals that John Carpenter may be involved: "John would like to produce it or do the music."'So, in keeping with the Halloween and Romero theme we've already got going, I figured this was as good a time as any to review Two Evil Eyes. Enjoy, and have a happy Halloween. Two Evil Eyes A.K.A. Due occhi diabolici'Can a mind exist in peace that takes its inspiration from Hell?' Dario Argento on Edgar Allan Poe Italian horror auteur Dario Argento has long had a fascination with the literary works of Edgar Allan Poe. He's completely conversant on the author's personal life as well as his and work, including all of Poe's prodigious output of essays, poems, and short stories. So, back in the late '80s, Argento thought perhaps it was time for a new film based on Poe's works after all, there hadn't been much done since the 1960s, when Roger Corman and Vincent Price crafted a number of films based loosely on the author's work. Considering the idea, Argento concluded the best way to go about it would be to make an anthology film one that would feature four film adaptations of various Poe short stories, one segment directed by George Romero (Dawn of the Dead), one from John Carpenter (Halloween), one from Wes Craven (A Nightmare on Elm Street) and one from Argento himself.
Review: The Black Cat The film was a match made in hell and a dream realized for many horror fans.
