Cassie Grant, a young American, walks through England and is hit by a car en route to Ashby Wake. Mrs. Marion Kirkman, the driver, calls an ambulance. The hospital examination reveals minor injuries, but Cassie has lost her memory from the accident. She only remembers her name and home country, with no recollection of her town, family, or purpose in England.
