Five years after helping to catch and kill the serial killer known as Uncle Eddie, NYPD Detective Stan Aubray is a wreck, reduced to alcoholism and demoted to teaching. When a stockbroker is found murdered in Uncle Eddie's signature style, Stan is assigned to the case alongside Detective Carl Uffner. At each new crime scene, artistically arranged murders offer tantalizing clues linking back to the old cases. As the body count rises, suspicion turns toward Stan himself.
