During the Napoleonic Wars, an officer discovers an old book telling the story of his grandfather, Alfons van Worden, a courageous captain in the Walloon Guard. Seeking the shortest route through the Sierra Morena, Alfons stops at the mysterious Venta Quemada, where two Islamic princesses seduce him before he awakens beneath a gallows beside several corpses. As he encounters a hermit, a goatherd, an inquisitor, and a cabalist, he becomes caught in a strange web of tales within tales, where love, mystery, and the supernatural blur together.
