Review: ‘What We Do in the Shadows’ – Chicago Tribune Eighty-five minutes of really funny, the New Zealand vampire mockumentary “What We Do in the Shadows” comes from the “Flight of the Conchords” folks and their pals. Let me restate: This is a comedy that works. It knows how to sustain a premise and strike the right, dry tone. The premise is simplicity itself. Four vampires of […]
Review: 'Shadows' treats vampires with a light, bright touch The faux-documentary comedy from 'Flight of the Conchords' team adds fresh bite to a bled-dry genre
What We Do in the Shadows What would happen if you stripped vampirism of all its moral horror and existential drama and just made it a thing, a way you happened to go from day to day? And then what if you allowed a documentary crew to come in and film your quotidian, blood-sucking, eternal existence? Best case scenario, what would happen is this: a splendidly low-key, straight-faced, and even heartfelt comedy about four undead flatmates navigating Wellington, New Zealand nightlife. They're all vampires, but seeing as how they hail from different walks of life — the lacy dandy, the swarthy peasant, the Slavic tyrant, and the ancient evil — there are difficulties. And then there's the new guy and his pre-deceased best friend. Plus werewolves. Pleasingly thorough and inventive in its treatment of a well-worn subject, and quietly smart about dealing with the way things can change over a few hundred years. And unlike its protagonists, it doesn't go on forever.

'What We Do in the Shadows' Review: A Wellington Vampire Mock Doc A mock documentary about Wellington vampires, “What We Do in the Shadows” begins with a title card jokingly crediting the pic to “the New Zealand Documentary Board” — the first and nearly the last gag related to its would-be comic conceit.

'What We Do in the Shadows' Movie Review The New Zealand-based vampire comedy 'What We Do in the Shadows' is as sharp as a pair of fangs.
“Movie Review” “What We Do in the Shadows” "What We Do in the Shadows" is a one-joke comedy about vampires, and yet another mockumentary/fake documentary, a gimmick that has turned seriously stale in recent years. But with those crackpot Kiwis Jemaine Clement and Taika Waititi behind it, you can be sure that one joke is going to deliver a lot of laughs, enough…
