Edgar Marsh, a shy librarian, becomes obsessed with his neighbor Betty Clare after seeing her undress. Despite her discomfort, he lavishes her with gifts and fantasies of a future together. When Betty becomes interested in Edgar's friend, Carl, Edgar murders him in a fit of jealousy and buries him under his floorboards. Edgar's guilt manifests as he hears the sound of the victim's heart beating in a ticking metronome and dripping faucet.
