The discovery of a girl's severely burned body on a Sydney beach initiates a lengthy investigation. Although the police have a suspect, retired inspector Thompson is convinced they are wrong and conducts his own investigation. Meanwhile, elsewhere, a young Dutch girl named Glenda juggles multiple lovers, eventually marrying one while continuing to see the others.
