In 1937, a circus clown is forced to fight in the Spanish Civil War, where he becomes a skilled killer. In 1973, his son Javier dreams of becoming a clown like his father, but can only play the Sad Clown due to his tragic life. He befriends the circus troupe but is abused by the brutish Happy Clown Sergio. Javier falls in love with Natalia, Sergio's abused wife, and tries to rescue her, leading to Sergio's jealousy. Natalia is torn between her lust for Javier and her attraction to Sergio.
