In contemporary London, the young and wealthy Dorian Gray falls for aspiring actress Sybil Vane, becoming briefly less self-centered. He sits for a portrait by his friend Basil Hallward and laments that he will age while the painting remains unchanged. After slapping Sybil and rejecting her, he indulges in a hedonistic lifestyle, noticing the painting ages while he does not. Dorian hides the portrait, living a corrupt life that ruins many, including Sybil. Eventually, he and Basil confront the now hideous painting.
