John Vandermark takes in struggling writer Sebastian St. Germain, who soon overstays his welcome. Upon discovering Sebastian’s manipulative nature, John forces him to work off his rent debt. When Sebastian accidentally dies during this ordeal, John tries to make amends by publishing Sebastian’s book posthumously. However, John claims the work as his own, leading to Sebastian’s vengeful return from beyond the grave.
