In 1820 Prague, impoverished student Balduin, known for his wild antics and swordsmanship, is approached by a sinister man named Scapinelli. In love with Countess Margit but hindered by his poverty, Balduin accepts Scapinelli's offer of 100,000 gold pieces for an item from his room. To his shock, Scapinelli takes his reflection instead, leaving Balduin without one.
