In 1900, ethnographer Andrey Beloretskiy arrives in a swampy, remote region of Belarus to study local folklore. There, he meets Nadezhda Yanovskaya, the last descendant of a once-powerful noble family, and uncovers a dark legend about King Stakh, leader of the Wild Hunt, who seeks vengeance on the descendants of his betrayer. Initially dismissing it as a fairy tale, Beloretskiy soon faces the reality of the legend as strange deaths unfold, forcing him to confront the Wild Hunt himself.
